Chapter 30

Rhonda McIntosh stepped through the double doors of the sheriff’s office and walked to the window. A round woman sat munching on some celery, making a face with each bite.

“May I hep ya?” the woman said between crunches.

“My name’s Rhonda McIntosh. I’m here to speak with, um, I think it was Captain Lowell?”

The desk sergeant stared at her through her glasses.

“You’re the one who called about the murder at the pavilion?”

“Yes ma’am,” she stammered.

“Just a second, I’ll let the cap’n know you’re here.”

Rhonda waited as the desk sergeant picked up her phone and called Captain Lowell. The woman said a few words and then nodded, following with a “yes sir” at the end. Replacing the phone on its holder, she exited her small booth and stepped toward Rhonda.

“If yeh’ll follow me, I’ll take ya to ‘im.”

Rhonda followed, and they ended up at the door marked “Captain.”

The desk sergeant knocked and opened the door when a voice told her to enter. She peeked her head in to announce Rhonda’s arrival and then turned to inform her she could go in.

Rhonda swallowed and walked into the office, a nervous smile playing on her lips.

The bald-headed captain was skinny and sported a black mustache. He hunched over his desk, scribbling something on a sheet of paper.

“Have a seat, Miss McIntosh,” he requested without looking up.

She obeyed, crossing and uncrossing her legs. It seemed hours passed before Captain Lowell looked up for the first time.

“Okay,” he said with a sigh, straightening the stack of papers. He set them aside and folded his hands on the desk. “Thank you for coming in, Miss McIntosh. Or is it Missus?”

“Oh, um, miss is fine, sir,” Rhonda replied. She smoothed out the wrinkles on her pants with her sweaty palms.

“Great. Anyway, if I remember correctly, Miss McIntosh, you told me you may have seen the murder of Bree DeLong? Can you tell me what happened?”

“Oh, no, I didn’t see her get killed,” Rhonda corrected. “But I saw her talking to someone. Well, more like arguing. It seemed pretty heated.”

“Can you describe this person? Male or female?”

Rhonda described who she saw as best as she could although her memory was vague. She admitted she didn’t pay too much attention that day. Captain Lowell asked if she would be willing to look in a book of possible suspects. She agreed, so he led her to a desk outside his office and placed a large book in front of her.

“Can I get you anything? Coffee? Water?”

“I guess water is okay,” she said, her eyes staring at the thick book. She opened it and flipped through the pages to see if she recognized the man she saw arguing with the woman.

There must be a hundred faces in here, she complained to herself, taking a sip of the water that was brought to her. Rhonda wondered if she should have left well enough alone, but she couldn’t stop thinking about the woman on the news. The woman she’d seen at the wedding.

She
